Could You Live Smaller Part I

As we get older and we look at our life where we want to be in ten years of retiring. I would love to see us downsize our current home of 1500 sq feet and land of five acres to a smaller home and lot.

The only thing about wanting to build smaller is the building codes will not allow you to build as small as you want in most areas.

Many people have downsized to a tiny home on wheels, such as, building it themselves or buying one already built. Living in less then 200 sq feet while trying to find someone to let you pull it in their back yard.  I love watch you-tube about tiny homes because they fascinate me.

Some have even purchased a school bus and remodeled it while living on the road, going from park to park. (not for me). There would be something in me saying , "I want to go home and I am tired of traveling", but there would be no home to go to.

While yet, some even sold their home and bought an RV to live in for a few years while they got out of debt, saved for a down payment or even saved for the entire amount of the new home cost. Some live in a RV for a life time.

My hats off to all who have done so!! You are an inspiration to us all.  For me, I would really have to consider why I would like to downsize and am I willing to give up living out by ourselves and move to a community where more people would be living close to us just to downsize?

Many have found a cozy little cottage in a good neighborhood with a nice private lot. I love reading about all those who have done this.

There is so much to consider when thinking about downsizing the home.  For the next few posts let's chat about it.   Have you thought about it ?  What are some things you have considered?  Maybe you have already made the move.  I would love to hear from you.

  1. Our home is only 960 sq feet. The plan when we purchased it 17 years ago was to stay a few years and then move to something larger. Well, that hasn't happened! There are moments when we wish for some more space, but when the moment passes we are content. At this point in our lives we are working toward becoming debt free and thinking of retirement. Our lot is half an acre and our street is fairly quiet so the new plan is to stay put until we can no longer care for the yard. Organization and cutting clutter is a huge key to living in a smaller space.

    1. I remembered you sharing that you all lived in an 960 sq ft home. I think it is wonderful! The house we lived in before this one was about that size. We loved it there! You are so right on cutting the clutter, it does make the biggest difference in smaller spaces. We are in the same boat as you getting debt free and thinking about retirement. I have been praying for the Lord's direction on selling and ??? (He knows, waiting for Him to show us.) Thank you for chatting with me.

  2. I would love to live in a smaller home when we get older but my husband gives me this deer in the head lights look. Haha!

    1. Ha ha I know that look! My hubby said, "if it was just him and me it would be fine." My oldest doesn't give a hoot for five acres she said, "if her hubby wants land then have fun, she is not touching it." She cracks me up. My youngest doesn't want to live in a crowded neighborhood. She said, "if all the houses had large yards and they wasn't any homes behind you and across the road from you then she wouldn't mind."

  3. We live in a small cottage, just under 1000 square feet. We have lived here all of our married life. We will celebrate our 50th anniversary this year. Our little cottage was built for my gramma and she was only able to live here for a short while. We were looking to buy a small starter home and this was perfect for us. We raised our son here and there were times that we thought it would be nice to have a bit more space, but decided this is where we wanted to retire. We are thankful to have been content all of those years and still feel very cosy in our little cottage. We have a small yard and garden. We also have a very small RV and enjoy traveling in it. We have kept within our budget through all of our years. I know that it is because of simple and small living. Thank you for sharing. Homespun Hugs ♥ Teri
